2022 Emrich-Schönleber Halenberg GG 5.0L 

This is the third time we've been able to do this; it's become one of my favorite traditions. There is just something so magical and cool about big bottles - and I don't see 5.0 liters out there all that much.

This truly is something of a centerpiece for any cellar.

A few notes about this year, the current circumstances.

First: German wine is exploding onto the world-scene, as we've long-since said it would. All this to say that these are *very* limited - we can only get a fraction of what we've gotten in previous years and that is that. These will be sold first come, first served.

Second: The estate kept the price-increase at a minimum and we are working lean to keep the pricing super reasonable. 

Now, what about the vintage?

We'll of course have a full vintage report coming - I spent two weeks in March 2023 visiting with some 40+ estates, including Emrich-Schönleber. 2022 is one of the most curious vintages of my career. It was warm and very dry. In a way, this dryness saved the vintage: It forced the vines to go into a sort of hibernation. In other words, despite the warmth, the vines did not produce excess sugar and the wines of the vintage have low alcohols and an uncommon delicacy. A cool harvest further preserved the acidity and so we have wines that are buoyant and energetic with an innate balance that reminds me of the 2020ers - one of my absolute favorite vintages for dry Rieslings in the Mosel and Nahe.

Note that while we have to confirm our order for the wines now, the Halenberg GG will not be available for delivery until after September 1st, 2023, as per the rules set down by the VDP for the GG bottlings.

Given the dramatic increase in interest for Emrich-Schönleber, this hardly needs to be stated anymore, but for us Emrich-Schönleber is simply one of the greatest estates in Germany, a part of our holy trilogy that includes Keller and Schäfer-Fröhlich.

Have no doubt: Demand (and pricing) will follow an upward trajectory in the next decade, so this offer today represents not only the rare chance to grab a cornerstone bottling for your cellar, but also represents a serious value.
