I wanted to begin the journey of Soilpimp Selections with something very special.
In the fall of last year, I asked one of my favorite producers in the Saar, Hofgut Falkenstein, if they'd consider making a cask of rosé for me. Shockingly, they agreed.
Today we offer out the only cases of this wine for the U.S. Quantities are very small so we ask customers to limit their purchase to 3 bottles. We expect this to sell out very quickly, so please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested.
This is the first true rosé the estate has ever made and winemaker Johannes Weber went all out for it, sourcing the grapes from one of their top parcels in the Herrenberg vineyard, the Zuckerberg. As Lars Carlberg wrote to me: "It's like making a Scharzhofberger rosé in Pergentsknopp."
This is a terroir rosé, inward-looking, stony and salty; it will age gracefully for many years. Other than a delicate, 3-hour maceration inside the press, the wine was made in the same exact way as the Rieslings, flowing from the press by gravity into an old Fuder cask for fermentation and elevage. It was on its gross lees until bottling.
This is an estate I have passionately followed for over a decade; they are now regarded, rightly, as one of the greats of the Saar and one of the purists of German wine. I'm so thankful to Johannes and Erich Weber, and to Lars Carlberg, for their friendship and for working with me on this project.
What is Soilpimp Selections?
I honestly don't have an answer to that question, yet.
What I do know is that I have no interest in the traditional model of an importer or distributor. I want to work with growers I love and respect to experiment, explore. This first collaboration with Hofgut Falkenstein gives you some idea of the project, yet each collaboration will be unique, working together with the growers, with creativity and freedom.
I truly believe the landscape of German wine is the most exciting it has ever been. The great estates are finally achieving the recognition they deserve; in so many instances the established estates are helping to foster a completely new generation of growers who are defining, and redefining, these historic landscapes.
It will be my honor to work with estates to give them the freedom to push boundaries, and to explore grapes, terroirs and methodologies they may otherwise feel are beyond their grasp... or at least beyond commercial viability. I will not overlook the overlooked.
There is no specific timeframe for any project; everything will be done only when it's worth doing. In any event, all Soilpimp Selections will first be offered exclusively through Source Material Wine - so if you're signed up, you'll hear about it first.
Thank you so much for all the support and if you have any questions, please ask!
