For the final weeks of 2021, two serious German-wine rarities came up from the Source Material vault, with kind thanks to Nadine and Julian Haart and Julia and Klaus Peter Keller for the donations.

We are so thankful to all of those who bid - together, we raised just under $11,000 - every single penny going to City Harvest in New York City, an incredible organization that brings food to those who need it most.

The lots we offered were fascinating bits of German wine history. First, a serious piece of Mosel history and perhaps the rarest bottle made by Nadine and Julian Haart: The first-ever vintage, first-ever bottling of their Pinot Noir Rosé from the Grand Cru Ohligsberg vineyard in the Mosel.

Nadine and Julian cleared and planted this site in 2018, using very special vine material from a friend. Situated in a prime location in the Grand Cru Ohligsberg, the total parcel is around half a hectare in size. Vintage 2020 was the first vintage they got any fruit at all - obviously the yields were incredibly low. Only a few double-magnums and about three cases of 750ml bottles were made. It is a dark, earthy yet crystalline Pinot Noir Rosé. As the vines are so young, Julian and Nadine decided to do a shorter skin contact, to make a wine that is somewhere between a delicate red and a more structured, tactile and saturating rosé.

The first lot consisted of only 24 bottles of this wine; lot two was five individual double-magnums. Each bottle has an artist’s label by the Chicago artist Ben Madeska: a sparse, minimalist plate for the 750ml bottle and a paring knife for the double-magnums.

Finally, lot three was a number of “Keller Grand Cru” maps, each one signed and numbered by Julia and Klaus Peter Keller. These are stunning pieces, hovering between art and design and covering all the top Keller sites from the Mosel’s Schubertslay to the two Roter Hang sites (Pettenthal and Hipping) and finally the hometown vineyards in and around Flörsheim-Dalsheim: Abtserde, Bürgel, Frauenberg, Kirchspiel, Hubacker and Morstein. No expense has been spared in their printing; the paper has a beautiful, tactile fiber. The maps measure 31.5 x 47.5 inches.
